Eye surgery is a big deal, no matter what the reason. The recovery time may vary depending on the type of operation you receive. But when it comes to cataract, retina, cornea, or any other type of surgery, you need to give your eye time to properly rest and heal properly.
Avoid getting water into the affected eye. While splashing water on your face can feel great, it can spread infections and cause greater eye discomfort after the procedure. Depending on the operation, the amount of time that prevents water from entering the eye may vary. For example, after a LASIK operation, you should use glasses for one week. Talk to your doctor for specific instructions.
This is not necessarily true for all operations. Therefore contact your doctor. For example, after retinal surgery, it is probably okay to get some water into your eye the day after the operation.
Be very gentle when you dry your face.

Customize your washing routine. Instead of spraying water to wash your face, moisten a washcloth and rinse your face with light pressure. Taking a shower can be difficult right after the operation as you need to avoid water dripping into your eye (except for retinal surgery). Until your doctor gives you the green light, it may be easier to take a bath in water that reaches down to your throat. [1] To wash your hair, tilt your head backwards to keep your hair wet while your face stays dry.
Avoid cosmetic products around the eyes. [2] You should avoid putting foreign bodies on the skin around the eye before being cleared by your doctor. This includes not only make-up, but also oils and lotions that you can use on the face regularly. Eye irritation from these products can lead to an infection that can endanger eye health.
Of course you can wear lipstick or lip gloss, but avoid any makeup that might come in contact with your eye.
Protect your eyes from direct sunlight. After surgery, your eyes can not adjust quickly to the light. Exposure to bright light can cause extreme photosensitivity and pain. [3] Because of this vulnerability, protect your eyes from anything that might harm them.
Wear sunglasses if you go out during the day as recommended by your surgeon. This usually takes about 3 days to a week, but may vary depending on the type of surgery. Follow the instructions of your doctor.
